Under New York State Law, the New York State Democratic Party is governed by a central body - the State Committee - comprised of around 300 people. With some rare exceptions, there is one "male" seat and one "female" seat on the State Committee per Assembly District. This gender binary is enshrined in the rules - something we should strive to change.
The State Committee - in theory - elects the State Party Chair, shapes the direction of the Party, and has a role in fundraising and budgeting. However, all of this work has been conducted "top down" for many, many years, despite ongoing efforts at reform.
Our current Male State Committee Member for AD-65, Chris Marte, is not running again now that he has been elected to the New York City Council. We have an opportunity to continue his work supporting efforts to reform the State Committee, and expanding the role of the State Committee Member locally through voter outreach and engagement.
This seat is our voice in the State Party. Let's make sure it works for us!
